Domaine Carneros Winery

Founded by the noble family behind Champagne Taittinger, Claude Taittinger’s search for a worthy U.S. counterpart began in the late 1970s. In 1987 he selected a 138-acre parcel in the heart of Carneros, Napa Valley.

Inspired by the classic 18th century Chateâu de la Marquetterie in Champagne, France, the Domaine Carneros Chateâu was completed in 1989. Its completion coincided with the first vintage of Domaine Carneros sparkling wine.

Taittinger recognized the ideal growing conditions of the Carneros region — a long, moderately cool growing season and temperatures slightly cooler than Burgundy, yet slightly warmer than Champagne.

Conditions such as these are optimal for slow, even ripening and perfect balance in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes — the principal grapes in champagne and fine sparkling wine. Wisely selecting Eileen Crane to oversee the development of the winery and vineyards, the team created the quintessential California expression of the Taittinger style in Carneros.

27 years later, Eileen Crane continues to head Domaine Carneros as Winemaker and CEO, now joined by TJ Evans who oversees the small-lot still Pinot Noir and Chardonnay production. Sparkling wines at Domaine Carneros are produced using the exacting Methode Champenoise, which dictates that second fermentation take place in individual bottles and results in the finest sparkling wines — rich and complete with bubbles that provide a creamy sensation.
